“Declaration of Independence Broadside”
Public viewing at the Arizona Historical Society Museum in Tucson
The Arizona Historical Society in Tucson was host to a formal
ceremony that opened public viewing of one of 25 known copies of
the 1776 Declaration of Independence Broadside at the Society’s
Museum. At this event the VFW was represented by Department
Commander V ‘Joe’ Reagan, President Mercy Montgomery, and a
large contingent of VFW Riders led by State Captain Dan
Ferguson, who assembled at VFW-4903 before the ceremony and
rode to the Historical Museum in a group. All VFW participants
were then afforded a special pre-ceremony viewing of the broadside.
Anne I Woosley, Ph.D, Executive Secretary of the Arizona
Historical Society organized this event. The ceremony itself was
elegant in both setting and style. Led by Congresswoman Gabreille
Giffords with participating groups including the Arizona Explorers,
the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the
American Revolution, the VFW Riders, the Arizona Rangers,
students from the Sonoran Science Academy and a number of
distinguished guests, including Tucson Mayor Robert Walkup with
video remarks by Sandra Day O’connor. Students from local High
Schools entertained the audience with music and vocalist ... This
was a memorable event of a historical moment in a historical
setting.
Historical Notes: On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress, led by
John Hancock, rendered official Thomas Jefferson text of the
Declaration of Independence to Philadelphia printer John Dunlap
(the original, signed, document is in the National archives). The
document was typeset and about 200 copies made for distribution
among the colonies. Known as the Dunlap Broadsides, there are
only 25 copies known to exist today (a Broadside is about the size of
a full sheet of newspaper, printed of one or both sides, and folded).
The Historical Society and the Capitol building in Phoenix are the
only locations in Arizona selected for public viewing of the Dunlap
Broadside.
